Research Methods for Business
This unit provides a series of lectures on academic presentation, writing skills and an introduction to research issues and methods. The unit examines a wide range of research methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative, with reference to their philosophical base and practical application in marketing, management, banking and the leisure industry. The aim is to help students design, implement and apply their own research as well as to equip them to be able to critically evaluate published material. Back to top

Operations and Process Management
This unit involves an overview of the processes and systems which are involved in the receipt, transformation and delivery of products and services in modern organisations. Students develop skills in analysing the major challenges of the operations function and applying specific analytical and numerical techniques in problem solving. Back to top

Managing People in Organisations
This unit involves critical exploration of core concepts in current organisational theory with comprehensive analysis of the new managerial implications and practices. Recent developments in human resource management are discussed in depth, while structural changes in organisations of different sizes and sectors are analysed. Back to top

Strategic Marketing
This unit integrates the "tools" and the framework that practitioners will use in applying marketing. The understanding of marketing requires the understanding of its concepts but the successful application of it requires the ability of analysis, evaluation and synthesis; analysis of the situation, evaluation of it and the synthesis of a solution. Furthermore, effective marketing application requires the ability to decide and implement under conditions of uncertainty and restrictions of resources.
In this unit the students will be expected to develop their analytical, critical and synthetic abilities regarding the elements of the marketing environment. They will be expected to draw on their knowledge of different aspects of marketing and provide complete solutions to marketing problems. Such solutions will be expected to be applied in different sectors of economic activity. Back to top

Accounting for Managers
Analysis of three key aspects of accounting practice. Management accounting involves the provision of information internally to facilitate processes of management control. Financial strategy concerns processes of capital investment and treasury management. Back to top

Entrepreneurship and Innovation
This unit presents an overview of entrepreneurship both as a process and as a style of management. It covers both the theoretical and practical issues facing independent entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial managers. The unit helps develop a framework for thinking as it provides a scheme for clarifying the factors and issues that are of critical importance in a business situation, helps to indicate the decisions that might be relevant to it and identifies the necessary elements in being able to exploit its potential. The unit initially examines the factors that influence and support entrepreneurial activity and behaviour. Support mechanisms and sources of finance for new ventures and ideas will also be discussed. Further, it presents a framework through which new ventures and growth firms can create entrepreneurial organisational systems, structures and cultures. Back to top

Performance Management and Leadership
Performance management is a process which contributes to the effective management of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organisational performance. As such, it establishes shared understanding about what is to be achieved and an approach to leading and developing people which will ensure that it is achieved. It involves the alignment of human resource strategy and organisational strategy to effectively reach organisational objectives. There are different levels of performance, employee, team and organisational all of which contribute to the wellbeing of the organisation. The aims of this unit is to introduce the student to the concepts, techniques and processes of employee performance management, reward systems and their importance in achieving organisational growth. Three dimensions will be incorporated to the unit:

  1. performance development and improvement,
  2. managing behaviour to avoid poor performance and
  3. leadership. Back to top

Dissertation
The dissertation represents a piece of individual and original research based on an approved topic of the student’s choice related to the course and selected in consultation with tutors. The term ‘originality’ here does not necessarily imply that the dissertation will develop new theoretical insights or models but that it clearly demonstrates the development of new insights and knowledge in the candidates own mind and work.
