Another successful round of Psychology for all Open Seminars has ended
The Department of Psychology of CITY College, the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, has during April and May delivered a series of intriguing seminars in the format of the Psychology for all Open Seminar Series at the main campus in Thessaloniki. The purpose of the seminar series is to open the doors of the college to the public and introduce them to current topics in psychology. It is also an opportunity for researchers and other specialists to spread their vast knowledge and expertise about their areas of interest. Entrance to the events is free but registration in advance is required. All the seminars were delivered in Greek. The April and May round of the Psychology for all Open Seminars was a great success with more than 100 visitors at every seminar. The topic of this round of seminars was healthy and active development after the age of 50. Each seminar provided a different perspective on the subject. A total of three highly informative seminars were held, with a different speaker every time. The first seminar took place on April 30 and featured Pavlidis George, PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield, who was followed by gymnast and personal Tsochas Kyriakos on May 14. The series concluded on May 28 with speaker Tsatali Marianna, neuropsychologist and PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield. We would like to thank all visitors and speakers for participating and contributing to the success of this round of the seminars. Also, we would like to thank the Department of Psychology for initiating the series.

Community Counselling Centre
The Psychology Department of CITY College is pleased to announce the official launch of the new Community Counselling Centre, which is located at Prox. Koromila's building, 5th floor. The Counselling Centre is open to the public and is equipped with all the necessary tools, which partially helps the counsellors to provide appropriate counselling and supervision as set by the professional standards of the relevant professional bodies. The centre operates with the first MA in Counselling Psychology students cohort, who completed the theoretical part of their studies last year, finished their experiential foundation training in the fall semester and have been trained in the eclectic approach (i.e. applying techniques from the main theoretical approaches depending on the client's problem - instead of using one approach for every client and every problem, which during times like this can be too expensive and not efficient). Each client can have as many sessions as they wish with a symbolic cost (5€) per person/ per session. Everyone who needs either to explore personal issues, modify undesirable behaviors, change unhelpful thinking problems or work on anything else that affects their daily routine negatively, can call at (2310) 22 45 21 leaving their name and phone number and we will call them back to arrange an initial assessment and if appropriate further appointments.

Our Psychology graduates can apply for registration to the HCPC and officially receive the title of Practitioner Psychologist
Further to the legislation of Acts passed in October 2012 in Greece our psychology graduates are now eligible to recognise their degrees as well as gain professional rights and work officially with the regulated title of ‘Psychologist’ in Greece. All our Bachelor alumni from the Psychology Department have eligibility to be licensed as ‘psychologists’, if they have extended their training at postgraduate level and/or have acquired further practical experience that can be documented, and, thus, to make use of the title 'psychologist' in Greece by first applying to the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the British regulating organisation. Applicants that meet HCPC’s requirements and succeed in becoming registered ‘Practitioner Counselling Psychologists’ may then proceed to transfer their professional rights to Greece and acquire their license. HCPC is a regulating organisation in the UK set up to protect the public. The Council keeps a register of health and care professionals who meet high standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health. Any graduate that becomes registered practitioner psychologist by HCPC be eligible to work and practice the profession of psychologist and legally use the protected title of ‘practitioner psychologist’ in the UK and in Greece (or any other European country). He/she will have the same employment rights as holders of Greek public university degrees. Ms. Athanasia Halatzouka We are proud to report the first case of a graduate of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, Ms. Athanasia Halatzouka, who became a registered ‘Practitioner Counselling Psychologist’ by HCPC after her successful application and is currently in the process to recognise her degree in Greece to officially acquire the professional title of ‘psychologist’. Athanasia completed the BSc in Psychology at the International Faculty, CITY College and furthered her knowledge by specialising in counselling psychology with the MSc in Counselling Psychology course offered by our Psychology Department, graduating in 2006. For the last three years she has her own office and works as ‘mental health professional’ in Thessaloniki practicing systemic psychotherapy and counselling. She also works at our research centre, SEERC. We believe this is a very important development for our psychology graduates and we encourage them to follow the required procedures in order to recognise their degrees and become licensed ‘psychologists’ in Greece. For further information graduates may contact Academic Director of Postgraduate Studies in our Psychology Department at ssavvidou@citycollege.sheffield.eu or at 2310-224421, 224521 or Mr. Evaggelos Ergen, Head of Administration at ergen@citycollege.sheffield.eu or at 2310 275575, 224186. Our Psychology Department becomes Organisational Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
We are happy to announce that our Psychology Department recently became ‘Organisational Member’ of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). BACP is currently the largest UK (over 37,000 members) professional body representing counselling and psychotherapy. This is another official demonstration that our Psychology Department is dedicated to practicing responsibly, ethically and to the highest of standards not only academically, but professionally too. Graduates of our postgraduate programmes in Counselling Psychology will have one more advantage as counsellors in their professional field, since they will have graduated from a Psychology Department that was organisational member of BACP. Dr. Suzie Savvidou , Academic Director of the postgraduate programmes in Counselling Psychology commented: “This membership is a very good development for our counselling students and graduates. The role of counselling becomes extremely important nowadays for everyone’s well being, and our graduates need to be distinguished among the so many counsellors and psychotherapists, with the status they deserve. Holding a degree from Sheffield University, in a Department which is an organizational member of BACP brings them closer to this achievement.” More info about BACP www.bacp.co.uk
