Dr Antonia Ypsilanti presented a paper at CEDEFOP's workshop
On the 21 and 22 of October Dr Antonia Ypsilanti, Lecturer at the Psychology Department of the International Faculty presented a paper titled "Intergenerational learning: An effective strategy for work-based learning in CVET" at CEDEFOP (Centre Européen pour le Développement de la Formation Professionnelle) in Thessaloniki, Greece. The abstract of the presentation (which was one of the 6 papers to be presented at the workshop) is the following: Intergenerational learning: An effective strategy for work-based learning in CVET By Ropes Donald, Holland University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands and Dr Ypsilanti Antonia, South East European Research Center, Thessaloniki, Greece Work-based learning (WBL) is becoming increasingly important to enterprises because of decreased training budgets as well as the realization that effective VET is embedded in the workplace itself. Furthermore, enterprises are more aware of the need to involve all ages in the CVET process. One way to do this is to organize intergenerational learning in the workplace. Intergenerational learning (IGL) is a type of work-based learning involving knowledge building, learning and innovation between generations in an organization. It is an effective way people from different ages, learning styles, values and motivations learn together (Ropes 2013). Examples of IGL include mentoring programs, mixed-age teams, and training programs specifically aimed at promoting interaction and learning among generations. This paper aims to illustrate the possibilities of IGL as WBL by presenting the results of a large-scale applied research project on organizing IGL in 43 enterprises across six EU countries. The IGL Toolkit (see www.intergenerationallearning.eu) was developed and systematically tested for efficacy together with 43 enterprises in four different sectors. Cultural and sectoraldiversity were considered throughout the entire process. Findings show IGL as an effective strategy for work-based learning in CVET, particularly in enterprises interested in capitalizing on the experience of older employees. Many barriers and critical success factors for implementing IGL were also found. IGL provides a unique and sustainable learning environment. This research can help policy makers to understand how to implement IGL as well as other types of WBL effectively. The workshop was addressed to European and national policy-makers, including social partners, and other key stakeholders working in the field of continuing vocational education and training (CVET) such as human resources managers, training providers and researchers. Through presentations and interactive sessions, the workshop aimed to share new knowledge and practical experience in work-based learning and to discuss their implications for policy and practice. The focus was on: 1. Effective use of work-based learning in CVET in firms; 2. How public policy and new forms of governance can support good practice. Our graduate Ms Katerina Siampani publishes a book about Dementia and the Alzheimer’s disease
Ms Katerina Siampani, a Psychology Department graduate of the International Faculty and holder of the MSc in Psychology and Counselling degree has recently published a book about the Alzheimer’s disease titled: "Walking together: The Gestalt Therapy Perspective in Dementia" The book presents the distilled clinical experience of Katerina Siampani, Counselling Psychologist and Gestalt Psychotherapist & Trainer, who has been working with dementia patients since 2002. At that time there were no Day Centres or other facilities as there are today and the Alzheimer Association launched a major campaign to raise public awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. While studying for her Counselling and Psychology Master’s Degree at CITY College in 2006, the writer completed her dissertation on "Depression and Anxiety among Women Caregivers: A comparative study of caregivers of older persons with and without dementia", the results of which are contained in the second part of the book, in Chapter 4. Since 2005 the author has been systematically recording her clinical experience of working with groups of people with dementia and coordinating caregivers’ groups. In 2008 Ms. Siampani submitted her dissertation titled "Gestalt Psychotherapy and Dementia: Theory and Practice" to Gestalt Foundation; the paper focused on case studies of the three stages of dementia and formed the basis for this book. The book was edited by Neurologist - Psychiatrist Magda Tsolaki, a Professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and it was published by the Hellenic Association of Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders. Although the book is written from the Gestalt psychotherapy perspective, it is a useful tool for mental health professionals using other approaches that work or intend to work with people suffering from dementia. The book contains suggestions for integrating other approaches, practical applications and a body of relevant literature. People with chronic diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer Disease, are not the only ones who suffer; people also suffering along with the chronically ill are those close to them and their caregivers. This book aims at helping the latter maintain a relationship with their loved ones through overcoming their initial horror upon hearing the diagnosis of dementia and through learning to cope with a mind losing its capacity for memory, logic, concentration, speech and so many other important faculties necessary for human communication. The book is available at the ILC library of CITY College.
