Personal & Professional Development Seminar: Echo and Narcissus in Victorian Poetry
Tuesday, 21 November 2023 Join and share! Participation Form Speaker: Dr James Williams Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture, Department of English and Related Literature, University of York Overview: Greek mythology (whether accessed directly from Greek texts, through Latin retellings, or from translations) is one of the great source traditions of European literature. We find its presence across all but the very earliest periods of English poetry, but the functions and qualities of the mythic imagination differ from age to age. In this series of two lectures, I want to think about the mythographical dimension of English poetry between high Romanticism and the advent of the 20th century, from Shelley to Freud, a period that it is convenient to call "Victorian". In the first, I consider the curious afterlife of Echo and Narcissus. I suggest the story can be found in some surprising places, and that it offers poets a way of thinking through questions of speech and silence, repetition and rhyme, meaning and communication. In the second, I move to the great intersecting underworld myths: Demeter and Persephone, and Orpheus and Eurydice. In both lectures I argue that myths in poetry in the nineteenth century are also myths about poetry: mythography provides a conceptual grammar for approaching questions that would, much later, be rearticulated in other idioms including pyschoanalysis and literary theory.

Personal & Professional Development Webinar: Becoming a skilled communicator: an invaluable 21st century skill
Tuesday, 7 November 2023 Join and share! Online Participation Form Join the Webinar Speaker: Ms Maria-Araxi Sachpazian Lecturer at the Humanities Department CITY College, University of York Europe Campus Overview: Our daily lives are steeped in oral communication, so it is not an exaggeration to say that our lives are dominated by speech events. From a post on Instagram to a professional presentation, people have to use their communicative abilities and critical thinking skills to put forward their thoughts, feelings and arguments in a concise and attention-grabbing way. Being unable to articulate a clear voice and lacking the skill to present one’s point of view can impede successful communication. This session aims to pinpoint the characteristics of effective communication and to identify attributes that skilled communicators possess. Mention will be made of impediments that lead to communication breakdowns while the role of strong emotions such as rage or passion will be examined to clarify why they may not be conducive to effective communication. Finally, the session will provide tips as to how participants can hone their communication skills. Humanities Department launches collaboration with IOM UN Migration Greece
We are very happy to announce the beginning of the collaboration between the Humanities Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus and the International Organization for Migration (Greece – IOM), the UN Migration Agency. In the framework of this collaboration, on Thursday, June 16th 2022, Dr Vicky Papachristou, Assistant Professor and Ms Maria-Araxi Sachpazian, Lecturer at the Humanities Department delivered two training seminars to IOM’s Skills Development & Community Engagement field teams. More specifically, facilitators who teach English to migrants attended a seminar titled “From theory to practice: applying methodologies of foreign language education in the classroom” which focused on the theoretical background of teaching approaches, as well as a seminar titled “From theory to practice: applying methodologies of foreign language education in the classroom: the practical aspect”, which offered attendees a number of useful and practical ideas to use in their teaching. IOM’s Coordination team for Skills Development & Community Engagement commented: “IOM in mainland Greece has been assessing the learning needs of adult site residents and has designed for meaningful learning activities (Greek, English and ICT courses). The specific training provided by the Humanities Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus was proven valuable in increasing IOM field staff's capacity and in fostering migrants’ overall empowerment during their stay within the Greek Reception system. We are positive that the collaboration with the CITY College trainers will significantly support IOM field teams' efforts to release the life-long learning potential of adult migrants residing in accommodation facilities across Greece’’. Dr Zoi Tatsioka, Head of Humanities Department stated: “We are very happy about our collaboration with IOM Greece as it allows us to respond to the training needs of IOM field teams and contribute to IOM’s noble cause.
