Library update

The Library has returned as an on-campus living, studying, and learning environment. We have reopened our physical spaces and facilities and further developed our services, while closely following government directives, public health guidance, and higher education best practices.

Please also check our Library Updates FAQs

Welcome to the Library

We are here to support students throughout their studies. We provide access to all the information resources and collections you will need for your studies and the support to use them in the most effective way.

Below you will find details, of how you will be able to access the library while on campus and what you can expect from the new services and arrangements as we had to adjust in order to provide a safe environment for our students and staff.

We hope that this information will help you plan for the new Academic Year and we look forward to welcoming you back to the library. Please note that we will continue to provide in person and online the high-quality Library Services you expect from us.

Safety rules in the Library

We need your help to maintain a safe environment in the Library, by adhering to the following rules:

  • Unless exempt, wear a face covering at all times whilst you are in the library. It is important to protect yourself and the people around you.
  • Use the hand disinfector available at the library entrance and at multiple locations elsewhere within the library. Regular hand disinfection is essential and particularly important before and after handling print material such as books and journals, using shared surfaces, workspaces, PCs, equipment, etc.
  • If you use a book, keep it with you, and then return it at the “Book Returns” shelves as you leave. Do not put items back on the shelves or leave them on desks. This will help keep everyone safe.
  • Adhere to physical distancing guidance (1.5 meters) and seating signage.
  • Do not move any chairs or furniture while in the library or study rooms.
  • With the exception of bottled drinks, food and drink is not allowed in the Library.
  • If you have symptoms of COVID-19 you must not come to the Library.

Finding, Borrowing and Returning items in the Library

The Library has put new procedures in place to limit the spread of the virus.

  • We aim to limit browsing on the shelves and collections, by strongly advising students and staff to use the OpenABEKT Library Catalogue to find items they require. The catalogue can be accessed from any mobile device, tablet or PC.
  • If you are not at the library, you can send an email at (library@citycollege.sheffield.eu) the details of the items you require. The library staff will collect for you and you can pick the items up later.

While at the Library:

  • Please use hand disinfector before and after browsing books on shelves.
  • When finished using print items from the library collections, DO NOT for any reason, place them back on the shelves. Print items (books, journal issues, dissertations), should not be re-shelved. Leave them on the “Book Returns” casebook.

For safety reasons and to minimize the risk of viral spread through the book and other collection surfaces, the library staff will be quarantining collection materials for 48 hours between hand-offs.

If case you only need a single chapter or journal article you can request by email a scan for your personal study and research using the Interlibrary Request Service.

Electronic Resources in the Library

The electronic resources and collections are available from any location, whether on-campus or not 24/7.

Please visit the How to access ONLINE Library Services webpages for detailed information.

We encourage all students to use our online resources. This will contribute to us reducing transmission in the library.

  • We will keep improving and updating our e-book collections in a variety of subject areas.
  • Whenever possible we will be obtaining e-copies of textbooks and any reference and recommended material included in the Syllabi of units rather than print to enable students to access the texts when and where they need them.

Computers and Study Spaces

As a result of the physical distancing measures required in light of Covid-19, there will be fewer study workspaces and computers available for use in the Library. Please plan ahead to find a free space and monitor the time you will spend in the working space. Be considerate of others.

  • All study spaces (with or without a computer) are for quiet individual study only. No group work in aloud in the premises of the Library – with the exception of the Project Room where a team of 5 students maximum can work on their group project or prepare for their presentation.
  • All seats and study workspaces are 1.5 meters apart. Please sit in the designated locations and do not move furniture for any reason or length of time.
  • Extra cleaning is in place, but you will be expected to clean any surface, study space, computer or printer that you need to touch, before and after use, with the disinfectant supplies provided, and dispose of the used wipes in the nearby bins.

Interlibrary loans and Digitised content (Scanning) service

The library will supply PDF copies of book chapters, journal articles, digitize print study pack wherever possible.

Please be prepared for longer waiting times, in particular for print items which have to be quarantined for 48 hours before we can issue them to you.
