CITY College at Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs

Mr. Zaharis, Director of SEERC , moderator of the Round Table Discussion

For another consecutive year CITY College supported the Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs, one of the most important events held annually in Thessaloniki and aims at exploring contemporary socio-political issues. The 8th edition of the Symposium took place this year with great success on 20 October 2019 at Olympion theatre.

Themed ‘The world in 2020: Governing at a time of ungovernability’ the Symposium examined Greece’s position in a complex and volatile international political and economic environment with many distinguished speakers from politics, academia who shed light on the topic from their viewpoint.  

Mr. Nikos Zacharis, Director of CITY College’s research centre, SEERC, participated in the event as moderator of the Round Table Discussion on ‘Europe in changing times’.

Welcome addresses were delivered by the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr Konstantinos ZervasMr. Dimitris Keridis, Director, Navarino Network and Mr Stavros Andreadis, Chairman, Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece.

Speakers included Margaritis Schinas, Commissioner-designate nominated as European Commission’s Vice-President for Protecting our Way of Life covering Migration, Security, Social Rights, Education, Culture and Youth, Dimitris Avramopoulos, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship who discussed the topic, Adonis Georgiadis, Minister of Development and Investment, Anna Diamantopoulou, resident, “DIKTIO” Network for Reform in Greece and Europe, Athens and former EU Commissioner, Brussels, Kevin Featherstone, Eleftherios Venizelos Professor in Contemporary Greek Studies and Professor in European Politics, London School of Economics, Dimitris Tsarouhas, Professor, Bilkent University, Turkey, Florian Bieber, Director, Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz, Florian Bieber, Director, Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz, Anders Åslund, Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council, Washington, Marcus Engler, Migration Researcher and Consultant, Berlin and many other prominent representatives of politics and the academia from around the world who analysed crucial on the Symposium’s topic.

The Symposium was organised by the Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece and the Navarino Network and shed light on issues of radical Islam, innovation and growth, new security challenges, European crisis, Greece and Cyprus’ crises. 

CITY College is annually supporting the Thessaloniki International Symposium with the aim of promoting the dissemination of ideas and opinions of top speakers on current socio-political issues, as well as enhancing Thessaloniki's extroversion.
