Opening of Photo Exhibition “A Journey into the Life of Yazidis in Greece”

On Monday, 23 April 2018 a successful opening took place for the photo exhibition ‘A Journey into the Life of Yazidis in Greece’ at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The event was co-organised by the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, the International Organization of Migration (Greece – IOM), the UN Migration Agency.

The exhibition showcases a collection of photographs taken by Yazidis currently living at the Open Accommodation Center for Migrants and Refugees in Serres, giving visitors insights into the long history of this ethno-religious minority and their persecution. The photographs document in a unique way the daily lives of Yazidis as people who have been forced to flee, introducing them to the Greek audience and answering to the question “Who are the Yazidis?”

At the opening of the event Ms Ioanna Kapnopoulou, Head of the Marketing, Communication and Student Recruitment Department of the International Faculty warmly welcomed all guests and briefly discussed the initiative of the photo exhibition, explaining that the aim was to raise awareness about the Yazidis, show how life is inside an accommodation center and present what is being done in order to providing adequate living standards and services to refugees. In the frame of the event Dr Alexandra Prodromidou presented the migration-related academic research conducted at the International Faculty the past years. Following Dr Prodromidou, Ms Christina Nikolaidou, Director of Communications at IOM who talked about the efforts of the Organisation to reduce the effects of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Greece with funding from the European Commission, providing useful statistics and insights.

However, the main speaker of the event was Ms Nadia Bashar, 28, from the Yazidi community who whole-heartedly shared her story with the visitors of the exhibition and talked about all the hardships and the suffering the Yazidis are going thought. Her words were particularly moving. The audience had the opportunity to ask Ms Bashar a few questions. The peak moment of the event was when Ms Bashar sang a beautiful Yazidi song.

Event participants reported that they were very impressed both by the photo exhibition and the event.

The photo exhibition will run until 14 May while at the same time items are being collected at our main campus for the Yazidis living at the Accommodation Center of Serres, in order to cover their needs.
