Congratulations to our Bachelor's students who have been awarded the SURE scholarships

SURE (Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience) offers The University of Sheffield's undergraduate students an opportunity to become directly involved in the research activity of the University, take part in "real life" research projects in subject areas that are of special interest, and experience what it's like to work in partnership with academic staff or collaboratively in a research group.
SURE offers funded research scholarships to undergraduate students. This year two students from the International Faculty received the SURE scheme award! Below our students Miruna Carmen Barbu from the Psychology Department and Roena Agolli from the Business Administration and Economics Department provide us with information about their research experience and their successful research projects.

Project Title: Comparing Interpersonal and Virtual Communication for Recycling: An Experimental Study

"One of my main interests is increasing recycling behaviours, as nowadays peoples’ interests have shifted from the outside world to technology, losing concern for environmental issues. As I am a co-founder of “Go Green” Project at CITY College, I have been active in engaging people in recycling within the University. The project proposed for SURE intends to broaden my actions, and is aimed at identifying the means through which people can be encouraged to recycle more often, combining aspects from several disciplines as well, such as Computer Science and Business, apart from Psychology, therefore making it genuinely interdisciplinary. I believe that this subject has always been and still is very important for all aspects of human life, therefore it is a great pleasure to carry out an experiment which will aid in increasing recycling intentions. Moreover, I will have a chance to expand my research skills and capabilities as well. Finally, I am confident that with the help of my supervisor, Dr. Lazuras, and my second supervisor, Ms. Gorgiev, I will be able to produce a successful research paper with promising results."

Project Title: The Impact of Microcredit on Women-Owned MSEs: Evidence from Albania

"It is an honour for me to be the recipient of a SURE Scholarship for 2014 as well as a validation of the value of hard work. My research interest focuses on microcredit – a contrasting paradigm of the traditional credit market, which involves the distribution of small, collateral-free loans to low-income earners, mainly women, with the purpose of assisting them in financing micro or small enterprises (MSEs). As a student interested in pursuing a career in finance and coming from a less developed country, I hold a special interest in financial policies relating to the development process in low-income countries. I would like to thank Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience, not only for providing the funding that allows me to undertake this research, but also for fostering my growth as a junior researcher. My genuine gratitude goes also to my first supervisor, Dr. Anastasios Karamanos for supporting and guiding me over the application, establishing an example of excellence as a mentor, researcher and role model, and to my second supervisor, Dr. Pavlos Gkasis for his intellectual stimulation, enthusiasm, and invaluable feedback. I feel privileged to have to work with them for this project."
