SURE Scheme – Computer Science student receives research funding

Congratulations to Mr Arlind Avdullahi, 2nd year bachelor student at our Computer Science Department on his successful research proposal that received funding from the University of Sheffield through the SURE scheme.

The project, entitled ‘Evaluation of a new resource allocation scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks via simulation’, aspires to evaluate a QoS (Quality of Service) supportive resource allocation algorithm by developing a specialized simulator.

The project will be supervised by Dr Thomas Lagkas, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department.

Project description

Modern WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) are being used in areas such as infrastructure security, environmental-industrial sensing as well as health monitoring. State-of-the-art IoT (Internet-of-Things) applications require efficient traffic differentiation, so that data packets are treated by the network according to their specific characteristics. For instance, data that is considered to be time critical, such as alarm messages of critical applications, has to be provided with more resources in order to avoid violation of time restrictions. The aim of this project is to evaluate a QoS (Quality of Service) supportive resource allocation algorithm by developing a specialized simulator. In this manner, recommendations on optimizing the allocation of resources in WSNs will be made based on the resulted network metrics.
